Increasing numbers of young people are being identified as requiring support with wellbeing and life-skills interventions to complement the academic goals of education.
These may be difficult to access in some settings; young people may not have time within the school day to access the strategies without missing other learning, staff may not be available to deliver interventions, or the young person may be struggling to access the setting at all.
For young people who are struggling to attend, it can be these foundational skills that are the essential first step in improving their engagement and reaching their potential.
Attending school provides a wealth of experiences alongside the academic subjects; social skills, developing independence, confidence building, providing structure and purpose to the day, opportunities to build resilience and learning to manage change. The absence of some of these skills can be the barrier to stepping inside a school or college..
It can be difficult for settings to deliver the flexibility needed to support young people to develop these skills outside of the school and for some young people this can mean that the intervention they need to improve their attendance is only available if they attend..
Laurel Haven can work with education providers, including maintained schools and post-16 colleges, independent providers and alternative provisions, to ensure young people continue to access some of the additional elements of education that are either unavailable within their named setting, or which young people are currently unable to access on site.
