Understanding Diagnosis

Work with young people and those who support them to build an understanding of how their strengths and differences impact their engagement and support needs.

Pupil Profile Examples

IEP or EHCP outcomes may include:

  • Develop understanding of ASD/ADHD and how this impacts learning
  • Learn to recognise when help is needed and develop ways to ask for help
  • Identify and learn strategies to support needs e.g. strategies to support memory, techniques for sensory regulation
  • Consider a range of strategies to support emotional regulation e.g. breathing techniques,, sensory feedback approaches, communication strategies etc.
  • Learn to recognise and understand physical signs of anxiety.
  • Develop ways of communicating needs to relevant professionals to support community and educational  engagement and transitions to new settings/activities e.g. personal profile, conversational scripts.

Intervention

Through discussion with setting, family and young person, build an understanding of the young person’s presenting barriers and identify specific goal for  intervention.

Use a staged process to build young person’s confidence toward accessing the community. We start with work in the home, preparing scripts, role playing activities, and considering ‘what if’ scenarios, before transferring these skills to planned, supported  trial sessions in the community.
